I thought that in response to Mom's post about being prepared it would be helpful to post some places that you can go to, to get basic information on being prepared. Most of them depend on which state you live in, and whether you have children underage. Most encourage you to get a lawyer to help minimize things like real estate taxes and to make sure that the right people are left with the right things. However, a handwritten will is legal given that the writer was sane, over 18 and that there were more than one witness who signed the will. Read more on these sites. (Note there are a lot of link on this page - I tried to only post the most relevant ones).
Other things to consider in addition to a will
- Home Inventory List (this is useful in wills, as well as floods, fires, or burglery).
- Deeds, Insurance Policy, Marriage Certificates, Social Security Cards, Drivers Liscence, Tax Records (Ready.gov)
- Guardianship for children (minors)
- Escape routes (in case of disasters) and meeting places
- Emergency numbers
- Can you think of any others? (Leave your comments)
2 notes:
Hello Heward family,
It is Karen Haymond. I was blog hopping a couldn't believe I ended up finding your family what a fun suprise to see how it has grown. I often think of you as I pass along parenting advice I learned from you,Shelly, back in the day Mark had spikey hair and my boys were little. I also recently told someone the story of why we don't go on the lake on the Sabbath. I learned that at a fireside that Dale spoke at to the youth.LOL
check out our little crew.
Shelly, you are so on the ball. We really need to work on these things. Even with Mike being a lawyer we haven't wrote a will yet. I am going to take your advice and start getting our ducks in a row.
